It’s no secret that my time in medicine almost killed me. - And I think the biggest reason why (more than the hours and the exhaustion) was this idea that we’re supposed to accept all of it with a smile. With gratitude. As if the system is doing us a FAVOUR. The 14-hour shifts, 7 days in a row. The mental overwhelm from having urgent 7 tasks competing for your attention. The constant anxiety and fear of making the wrong mistake that could cost a life. The superiors who look straight through you. And then, when you say anything about it, you’re met with: “Oh but how LUCKY are you to be a doctor?” “You’re saving lives, why would you want to do anything else?” That’s the part that really f*cking broke me 😞 I ended up leaving medicine because I just couldn’t take it any longer. And even then, I felt so guilty because of this exact attitude. I thought I was weak, for choosing not to suffer for such a prestigious career. But now that I’ve built a career that I genuinely LOVE and ENJOY every single day… I’ve learnt that suffering SHOULDN’T be a rite of passage. It’s not what makes you a good doctor. It’s not what makes you “worthy” of the title. And it was NEVER supposed to be the price you pay for a career that you love. The more that we say this out loud, and support others who are brave enough to say it too, the louder that calling gets. So, are you with me? 🙏🏽 - P.S. If you’re feeling the weight of medicine on your shoulders, and you’re not sure whether you’d be happier in a different career… I built a quiz to help you work out what’s best for you (and a free training to help you take action) 🩺🥹 Click the link in my bio to take it ✨ Love, Dr Sarah Rav 💗 - #doctorsoftiktok #doctorlife #australiandoctor #careerpivot #careerchange
