at a certain point, discussing how awful what happened to you was, just becomes ruminating on how awful you feel

Yall know yall can talk about different things in therapy right? You can move past one thing and go on to a different thing. And sometimes it’s just good to have someone to bounce ideas off of or have a scheduled talk if you had a stressful week. If your therapy is always about healing then maybe you are doing it wrong

You do not determine what “the point” of therapy is for other people

"the point of therapy is not to stay in therapy" shout it louder from the rooftops. Learn skills, apply them with assistance, move on with life

Thank you Cigna, im sorry im not healing to your timeline properly. I’ll ask my therapist what’s wrong and what i need to do exactly, then reduce my visits. Very helpful!!

"point of therapy is to let that shit go" naturally, to let it go naturally and that means going through the stages of grief, over and over again in random order sometimes for years

I don’t agree whatsoever with “the point of therapy is not to stay in therapy” because a good therapist is someone that you just get to talk to and have them listen and give you ideas on how to look at stuff differently… not just trauma or your past but like… that movie you went and saw last week… also “letting things go” is NOT the point of therapy either. The point of healing is to be able to talk about and disable the hold and power events have on you. It is NOT letting it go, that is compartmentalizing and while logically makes sense, is NOT healthy.

YES!! I’ve been saying this. You are supposed to graduate therapy!! Stop dwelling on it and use that same energy for something better.

I think this works in some cases but not all. I have benefited from consistency in therapy. There are things that I have let go and learned to live with and other things I am still unraveling.

Sometimes… it is the point in fact. Talk therapy can be just as much a part of a long term treatment plan for mental illness as medication is. For some people, “letting it go” isn’t really an option if you are living with mental illness you have to deal with every day

Therapist here. My job is much more akin to a physical therapist than a self help guru. Work it out and move forward without me!

I think therapy is good to stay in, only thing you lose in that case is money. If that’s something you have the luxury to afford then I’d suggest to maintain the habit. Additionally, I tend to work through issues in my life by vocalizing and I don’t want to put that emotional burden on my friends all the time.

If we spend all our time engaging in what we need to heal or improve, we can’t focus on the improvement we have made and the present moment. We forget to live. I have had a counselor for 5 years but I have found myself in many different stages of life and just wanting the support to vent through that. I also think people think healing means they will feel wonderful and have no issues but healing is expanding capacity to handle discomfort and stress and deal with it better, move through it and still live life.

this works... if theyre going to therapy for the reasons YOU are going to therapy 😅 . some of us have conditions that are going to be managed in therapy for the rest of our lives and thats also fine. just.. dont make general statements about other peoples medical care?

I think it depends on why a person is in therapy. I'm likely to be in it in some capacity for life bc of treatment resistent schizoaffective bipolar. I need help managing delusions and paranoias. I'll always have a therapist just like I'll always have a psychiatrist and caregiver

Ongoing therapy is part of my self care. It’s like working with a personal trainer or a financial advisor for me. It’s something I benefit from. It’s a place for continued growth.

as a counselor in a high LOC, THANK YOU!! the point is not to have a therapist long term. if your therapist is not encouraging you to gain skills & manage on your own, that is not a good therapist.

I’ve been seeing my therapist for 5 years. I go live and see her regularly to stay grounded. Otherwise I’ll ruminate and analyze and stay rooted in one spot all by myself. My therapist moves me out of that.

I think the end goal in therapy will be different for everyone depending on what they need and what they’re going through. It’s not typically a short process
