I KNOWWWW what some of the comments are going to say… 👀 “But SSDI and SSI are for people who can’t work.” And THAT is exactly why I think we need to have this conversation♿️ I’m incredibly proud that I’ve been able to build a career, work, earn money and create a life for myself after becoming paralyzed. I WANT to work. I WANT to be successful. I WANT to be financially independent. But earning money didn’t suddenly erase the cost of being disabled... My wheelchair didn’t disappear. My medical supplies didn’t disappear. My accessibility needs didn’t disappear. My disability didn’t disappear. In fact, I have to spend over $15,000 A YEAR just on the supplies I need to pee and poop. Not vacations. Not luxuries. Not things that make my life more convenient. Basic. Bodily. Functions. And that’s only ONE piece of the financial reality of living with a disability. So no, this isn’t me saying I should receive unlimited benefits regardless of income. It’s me asking why our system so often treats “able to earn money” and “disabled” like they can’t exist at the same time. Disabled people SHOULD be encouraged to work if they’re able. We SHOULD be encouraged to build careers. We SHOULD be encouraged to earn more and become financially independent. But becoming successful doesn’t magically eliminate the additional expenses that come with disability. My paycheck changed. My spinal cord didn’t♿️ So I genuinely want to hear from y’all!! How do we create a system that encourages disabled people to succeed WITHOUT making support and success feel like opposing choices? #DisabilityAwareness #DisabledAndProud #WheelchairUser #DisabilityAdvocacy #SpinalCordInjury
