Playing devils advocate, I work in middle management and it’s torture. You get crap from the leadership who don’t really have a clue what goes on and you’ve got to translate the nonsense to the team. It’s an awful position to be in… wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

I had a boss once that would never push back on upper management. Then I got a boss that would push back and it was wonderful. We actually got things done and work was more enjoyable.

Senior management bringing in a consultant to check the direction of travel is an interesting choice. Either bring them in at the beginning to decide the strategy or embed them in the team if specialist knowledge is needed. Having them ‘check people’s work’ is demoralising and wastes money.

When I watch your videos, I see my manager, and it’s really frustrating. He doesn’t support the team, he just follows instructions without thinking about how they affect us. Recently, we had to update all our currency conversions from dollars to local currencies in just one day. When I asked who would manage future currency changes, he said, “I don’t know, just do it.” Now we’re facing another process change with no information or guidance. I love my job, but my manager makes it hard to stay at the company.
