It’s interesting how this book seems to sit between discomfort and recognition, almost reflecting Schopenhauer’s more pessimistic view of human experience :)

Love the content mate. As someone with ADHD it’s hard for me to get motivated to read, not because of focus but just motivation and other more exciting (dopamine inducing) activities. I listen to a lot of podcasts though, so i can learn that way. Do you think reading books is important even if one listens to podcasts a lot?

Bob Marley, said, “ one good thing about music, is when it hits you no pain. So hit me with music.” And, while we can debate the meaning of “pain,” it is understandable, for me, what he meant.

He wrote it in the 19th century but till this day it still makes more sense about the satisfaction of things in life. I was contemplating about this yesterday. Funny how we think that everything thats happening to us we are the first ones to experience them yet even the ones before us they went through it so are the ones that will come after us

When you not only escape but also connect to the art/music in a way that it is where you find both your peace & your suffering… madness.

My take on suffering is that without it, we’d still be living in caves. Everything we do is designed to reduce suffering. Think about it. You work endless hours in that job you don’t like so you don’t go hungry and can put a roof over your head. And so you can afford to educate your kids so they can get a job so they too can alleviate their own suffering!!You dedicate your life to the pursuit of wealth so you can retire early or so we can go on holidays to escape your stressful life or so you can buy a car so you don’t have to take public transport. You buy clothes so you feel good about yourself or so others tell you how great you look so you can feel a sense of self worth. You look for a spouse or get yourself a pet so you have companionship so you aren’t lonely. Everything you do is to meet a perceived NEED that you believe when met, will alleviate your suffering. The truth is however, that none of this elevates suffering except for the very short term. There is a way to escape or reduce the suffering but I won’t tell you what it is because you won’t believe me.

This makes total sense now. I reflect back to the time I used to make music, I was free and happy, and now I feel miserable just working… I love your book recommendations and it’s been really healing while I am dealing with mid life crisis 😅 thank you, truly 🙏

its a shame but one cannot not imagine whether it was rejection from women that contributed to his insight , of not being wanted until your are such someone that the same qualities that people use as currency for admiration suddently become meaningless and petty. His search for greatness revealed how meaningless it was. Schopenhaur greatest lesson to us perphaps is about our biggest realisation ; counterfactual collapse .

This was so profoundly useful. It got me thinking about the links between Schopenhauer's idea of suffering and Eastern philosophies, notably Buddhism. Thank you.

Schopenhauer is amazing. Very strenuous/laborious to read in my opinion, especially since we read Schopenhauer in the original version (German.) But def worth reading/understanding!💘💘
