Investigators later determined that Chism followed Ritzer into a school bathroom, where he carried out a brutal attack before stealing her belongings and attempting to conceal the crime. Surveillance footage played a major role in the investigation, helping authorities piece together his movements throughout the day. The case shocked the nation due to both the victim’s young age and the fact that the suspect was only 14 years old. Chism was ultimately convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
