Dear social media friends, community members, and well-wishers, As you know, I’m always on a mission to try interesting local dishes. So when I came across a recipe for banana flower, I got ridiculously excited. 🌺✨ I rushed into my garden, found a beautiful banana flower, and started preparing it with great anticipation. That’s when the trouble began. 😳 The moment I started peeling it, everything started turning brown. My cutting board. My sink. My plates. My knife. My hands. My fingernails. Everything. At one point I was seriously wondering if my teeth would be next. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Still, I pressed on. 💪🏽 I added onions, peppers, curry, black pepper, seasonings, a little sugar, a little brown sugar, and sautéed everything in coconut oil. I completely abandoned the recipe and decided to trust my instincts. And honestly? It smelled fantastic. 👏🏽 My hopes were soaring. I was already imagining myself sharing this amazing discovery with all of you. Then came the taste test. 🍽️ The first bite wasn’t bad. The second bite raised questions. By the third bite, I knew I had made a terrible mistake. 😭 The bitterness hit me like a truck and refused to leave. Every chew seemed worse than the last until I accepted the truth: This was a bitter, disappointing mess. Before anyone comes for me in the comments, yes, banana flower is edible. Apparently millions of people around the world enjoy it. I also think I rushed the process and could have done a lot more to reduce the bitterness. That said… based on my first attempt, I remain deeply suspicious. 😂 Would I try it again? Maybe. Would I be excited about it?
