When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, America was already diverse. About 2.5 million people lived in the 13 colonies. Nearly 500,000 were enslaved Africans. Indigenous nations still occupied large portions of the continent. And among Europeans, it wasn’t just “British.” There were Scots-Irish, Germans, Dutch, French, Swedes, and more — all with different languages, religions, and customs. So when people say we need to “preserve white American culture,” I have a question: Which one? English? German? Dutch? Presbyterian? Anglican? Catholic? Quaker? There has never been a single, pure white culture in America. That’s not how we started. Our history is complicated. It includes injustice, displacement, slavery, and exclusion. But it was never culturally uniform. Diversity isn’t new. It’s foundational. And if we’re going to talk about preserving America, we should start by telling the truth about what it actually was. #america #racismawareness #whitesupreamacists #foundingfathers #diversity
