how do you balance showing the wound without the character becoming repetitive/annoying? My MC believes vulnerability will be exploited so becomes cold and indifferent, she's falling for someone against her best judgement (as love is a weakness itself to her) and knows it can't last but cant help herself. But I'm worried she's too frustrating for readers to enjoy her if that makes sense?

every character adapts there backstory in different ways, characters that have the same backstory can have different personalities

🙌🏻 Yes, exactly! I personally skip backstories, I care more about what they choose to do going forward. I definitely would enjoy piecing it together and thinking over the choices, instead of being forcefully spoon-fed the answer.

So true! I DNF’d a book bc it was about 400 pages too long and a lot of it was her repeatedly saying what happened in her past. She wrote the flashback, had characters talk about what happened, and then she repeatedly told everyone what happened. But her behavior didn’t match the backstory (in my opinion) and hearing the same thing over and over again was exhausting to read

I got rid of all flashbacks 🙏🏼 thx, but something that I see in romances all the time are the thoughts of the character (first pov) about themselves. What do you think about that? The exposition that you talked about
