#billwatterson As a native of the suburbs of Cleveland I had no idea why I loved Calvin and Hobbes so much, and why no one ever told me that Watterson spent a majority of his life where I grew up. So it makes sense why I was able to connect with his art instantly, and even more reason to write about him. There’s something so rare about an artist who does the opposite of licensing and doesn’t want to see their characters anywhere but the pages they started on, it’s almost alien, especially nowadays where most comics are adapted into visual mediums to gain more popularity. That wasn’t the game for Watterson, and there’s something extremely admirable about letting go of the need to be ultra successful and wealthy at the expense of your original ideas. Apart from that he did comic strips better than anyone to come before or after him, and though he pushed to bring strips back in a big way, they still aren’t nearly as talked about or represented in medium of comics the way they should.
