Hello! I keep reposting this because I really want this to garner traction due to the amount of misinformation about DID floating around. People usually just chalk it up to alters, but that isn’t all that it is. DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) is a disorder caused by repetitive or intense trauma usually between the ages 7-12. It is a fragmentation of the personality. These personality fragments have amnesia barriers that form between them and create their own forms of identity, also known as alters. This is a form of a defense mechanism to try to protect the mind from the trauma that caused the fragmentation as memories get passed to different alters or simply repressed. However, the amnesia barriers creates intense dissociation, brain fog, and the presence of multiple identities creates confusion and a lack of self. Each alter, however, is formed for a different “job” in the mind. Some hold memories, some hold the intrusive thoughts the mind can’t handle, others deal with socializing, and some people have alters that come out for certain things like school or work. This is called a system. To clear up some things: There is no “original” alter. It’s a fragmentation, not mitosis. Poly fragmented systems exist. Fictive heavy systems exist. Most of the time, fake claiming is more harmful than good. ok thanks Resources: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/9792-dissociative-identity-disorder-multiple-personality-disorder https://deconstructingstigma.org/guides/did https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/dissociation-and-dissociative-disorders/dissociative-disorders/ https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dissociative-disorders/symptoms-causes/syc-20355215 #MentalHealth #mentalhealthmatters #MentalHealthAwareness #dissociativeidentitydisorder #representationmatters
