First, I want to say that this is not at all related to my friend’s circumstance in August. This is just something I think about and talk about a lot with others. Sadly, an InReach would not have changed the outcome for my friend in August, HOWEVER, it would have saved his loved ones the week of mental agony while we searched for him, wondering if he was ok. For this reason, I will always advocate for hiking with an InReach and using text message updates or the live tracking function. An InReach does not guarantee a timely rescue, and I don’t think that is discussed nearly enough! In addition to an InReach, I do my best (though imperfectly!!!) to pack enough resources to hunker down and tend to injuries for a handful of days. This includes multiple battery banks and backup phone chargers, a first aid kit including items like a CAT tourniquet and SAM splint, firestarting gear, and an emergency blanket and shelter. This is not always possible though when considering trail running, FKTs, fastpacking, and ultralight endeavors. This is where the ethical line gets a bit blurry. I don’t have the answers, but it’s an interesting conversation :-)
