True purification comes from acknowledging one's past unwholesome actions (akusala), making a firm determination not to repeat them, and living a virtuous and ethical life. The Buddha clearly taught that while one may become physically exhausted from bathing in rivers, one cannot wash away the stains of the mind (greed, hatred, and delusion).
