Batman Begins turns 21 today. And it still holds up better than most superhero films made after it. Remember that in 2005 nobody really believed this was going to work. Batman & Robin had basically buried the franchise 8 years earlier and expectations going in were genuinely low. Warner Bros. had rejected multiple reboot pitches since 1998 before finally handing it to Nolan, who had only made Memento and Insomnia at that point. The guy they gave a $150 million Batman film to had two movies under his belt. Nolan only planned to shoot in Chicago for a few days but fell so in love with the city that he asked for three more weeks. The Lower Wacker Drive Batmobile chase is still one of the best action sequences in the trilogy. Christian Bale. Michael Caine. Gary Oldman. Cillian Murphy. Liam Neeson. Morgan Freeman. In a superhero origin film. That cast still feels a bit ridiculous.
