I love the life our family has built here in China—the rhythm of our days, the opportunities, the community. But beneath that gratitude, there’s a question that keeps surfacing: Is this really the right place for our children? I see so many students buckling under the weight of the education system here—the relentless pressure, the narrowing definition of success, the toll it takes on their sense of self. It’s hard not to wonder whether my kids will one day feel that same weight, and whether I’m doing them a disservice by letting them stay. My wife, who grew up in this system, sees it differently. She knows its demands from the inside—and yet she trusts that our children will be fine. Maybe because she herself emerged resilient, or because she believes we can buffer the pressures at home. But for me, coming from the UK where learning felt more exploratory and less high-stakes, the contrast is stark. It’s not that the British system is without flaws—it has plenty—but the difference in values around childhood, autonomy, and failure is profound. And that difference sits with me, quietly, most days. This isn’t about one system being right or wrong. It’s about the quiet tension of loving the life we’ve built while fearing the cost it might ask of our children—and not knowing yet which voice to trust. #china #family #chinalife #raisingkids #mixedfamily
