The acronym LGBTQ+ is used to refer to the community of people with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. It unites individuals whose orientation or gender characteristics differ from the majority (heterosexuality and cisgenderism). 📝 Breakdown of the Letters • L (Lesbian): Women who are romantically and/or sexually attracted exclusively to women. • G (Gay): Men who are romantically and/or sexually attracted exclusively to men (the term is also sometimes applied generally to all homosexual people). • B (Bisexual): People who are attracted to individuals of both their own gender and other genders. • T (Transgender): People whose gender identity (their internal sense of being a man, woman, or non-binary person) does not align with the biological sex assigned to them at birth. • Q (Queer / Questioning): "Queer" is an umbrella term for anyone who does not fit into traditional categories of sexuality or gender; "Questioning" refers to those who are still exploring their identity. • + (Plus): A symbol representing other identities not included in the main acronym (such as intersex, asexual, pansexual individuals, and others). ⏳ How and When Did the Concept Emerge? People with diverse orientations and identities have existed throughout human history (from Ancient Greece to the Indigenous peoples of the Americas). However, the political movement itself and the modern acronym were shaped in the 20th century. 1. The Civil Rights Movement (1960s): The key turning point for the modern movement is considered to be the Stonewall riots (June 1969 in New York City). At that time, members of the gay community fought back against regular police raids at the Stonewall Inn gay bar. This event led to the creation of mass civil rights organizations. 2. The Evolution of the Term (1970s–1990s): • In the 1970s, the general word "gay" or the phrase "gay and lesbian" was most commonly used in English-speaking environments. • In the late 1980s, the three-letter abbreviation LGB emerged to officially emphasize the inclusion of bisexual women and men. • In the early 1990s, the letter T (transgender) was added, forming the familiar LGBT. This happened as activists recognized the shared challenges of discrimination. • In 1996, the letter Q (Queer) began to be incorporated into the acronym, and the + sign was added later, making the term as open and inclusive as possible. 🔬 What Does Science Say About the Origins of These Orientations? From the perspective of modern medicine, biology, and psychology (including the World Health Organization), homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgender identity are not mental disorders or illnesses. Numerous studies (including genetic analyses of twins) demonstrate that sexual orientation is formed under the influence of a complex combination of biological factors: genetics, hormone levels during prenatal development, and specific brain characteristics. There is no single "gay gene," but an innate biological predisposition plays a key role. Orientation is not the result of upbringing, whim, or "trend," and it cannot be consciously changed.
