BODY COMPOSITION: What is it and how do we measure it? This is what your body is made up of - either fat mass, fat free mass (muscle, bone etc) or solely your muscle mass. Getting an accurate % of these metrics is very difficult, with the gold standard (DEXA Scanners) costing an arm and a leg. Skin fold thickness assessments can be accurate, but also have their issue with user/human error. This results in people relying on scales or girth measurements, which don’t really tell us anything to do with body composition: ⚖️ Scales just tell us how much you weigh - not what your weight is made up of ⭕️ And girth measurements just tell us changes to the circumference of area - those changes could be from fat mass or muscle mass (we would have no idea). Despite these challenges, progress photos/videos are the cheapest, easiest and most efficient way of seeing visual changes to our body composition. We won’t get a % value from these tests, but we get a true picture of what people usually want to see when they aim to improve body composition - visual changes in their body. To get the most from these progress measures, take them at the same time of day, in the same room/with the same lighting and angle usually on a monthly basis!
Early cartilage changes that begin the first stages of joint degeneration in arthritis. Cartilage begins to break down in an early arthritic joint when the smooth protective surface that covers the ends of bones starts to lose its strength. Healthy cartilage is firm yet flexible. It allows bones to glide without friction. When the joint experiences repeated stress, minor injuries or chemical changes from inflammation, the cells inside the cartilage react. These cells begin releasing enzymes that slowly weaken the collagen and other structural proteins that keep the cartilage firm. As these proteins break apart, the surface becomes softer and less even. The softened cartilage can no longer handle normal pressure. Small cracks appear in the surface. These cracks allow fluid to seep into deeper layers and cause further swelling. The swelling places more stress on the remaining structure. At the same time, the joint lining becomes irritated and produces inflammatory signals. These signals speed up the breakdown of proteins inside the cartilage and make the damage more rapid. As the surface becomes rougher, movement inside the joint creates more friction. This friction irritates the surrounding tissues and increases inflammation. The cycle repeats as weakened cartilage breaks down faster. These early changes mark the beginning of joint degeneration that later becomes more noticeable in arthritis. #science #biology
