The term “Ayigbe” is used by Akan and Ga people to refer to the Ewe, though it can be considered offensive by some. According to tradition, both the Ewe and Ga people once lived together at Nortsie in present-day Togo. As their population grew, they separated—some Ewes moved to the Volta Region of Ghana, while some Gas moved to Accra. The Gas who remained were led by a prince named Ayi, while those who migrated were led by a king. After the king’s death, messengers were sent to Ayi to return and take the throne. However, Ayi, who had already become a leader among the people he lived with, refused.
