This movie came out during a renaissance of Australian Cinema. “Strictly Ballroom” and “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” are two other absolute gems. 💎

This movie is so so sad, with a very peppy ABBA soundtrack jarringly creating cognitive dissonance.

Muriel’s Wedding is a “Tragicomedy”. It’s very funny & light in parts, but underneath it’s quite a sad story. It’s actually very clever writing.

I actually grew up in Porpoise Spit - by that I mean the little coastal city where the Porpoise Spit scenes were filmed. It was EXACTLY as portrayed in the movie.

As a child, Muriel’s wedding made me feel so depressed. As an adult, I actually get it. I still feel so awful for her mum though, she was the sweetest sweetheart who deserved so much better 😢

I watched this for the first time with a guy I had been seeing for about a month and when it ended I turned to him and said “this is my new favorite movie” and he ghosted me later that week. But also good riddance bc this movie is incredible on so many levels

I always found it so sad. That poor mother, not even Muriel sees her.

To me it feels like the story resolves itself when Muriel realizes that she's turning into her father. Someone who only cares about what other people think about them, and who is willing to step on anybody and ignore anybody else's feelings as long as they get what they want. And she realizes that at her mother's funeral when her father's talking about how the Prime Minister wrote them a letter, and how proud he is that everyone thinks he's important because of it. That finally wakes her up and right afterwards is when she decides she can't stay married.

Rachel Griffiths and Toni Collette are terrific together. Loved this film. Aussie movies are really well done.
