@jakemiller.dev: Never build your own login unless you absolutely have to. A good authentication provider does way more than protect passwords. It handles account recovery, password resets, multi-factor authentication, session security, suspicious login detection, bot protection, credential stuffing defense, OAuth/social login, secure token handling, audit logs, and compliance-friendly identity controls. Login looks simple until something goes wrong. Then it becomes one of the biggest security risks in your app. Use providers like Auth0, Clerk, Okta, Firebase Auth, Microsoft Entra, Cognito, or similar tools so you can focus on building your product — not becoming an identity security team overnight. #Cybersecurity #AppSecurity #StartupSecurity #BuildInPublic #SoftwareDevelopment #WebDev #Authentication #IdentitySecurity #SaaS #TechTok #AITools #VibeCoding #SecureByDesign #FounderTips #Zivis

Comrade Coolpants :
I'm so tired of hearing this. Some of us actually are domain experts. Rolling your own auth is genuinely not that hard. Now would I recommend rolling your own crypto? No. For 99.99999% of engineers, definitely not.

I let laravel framework handle authentication 🤷🏿♂️

If you’re an actual software engineer you should be able to build this completely with Claude code without much trouble

I just save everything in raw text to a jsonl db its the most secure

People will keep telling you that you need to spend thousands of dollars on third party services. There are known well established solutions to deal with this that you can do yourself.

I was once forced by a client to use their own authentication system which passed the password in a GET request in a query parameter 😩

I've noticed that building your own authentication is becoming more rare in the industry. Yeah security is a big factor (especially if developers don't have security expertise), but I think its mainly because of speed, & convenience.

whos out here doing this when theres supabase or a lot of other free options that do this already

I feel like Claude can now reliably build all of this out, what's the point in introducing another 3rd party into the software

Does supabase’s auth system count for this?

ehhh, yeah maybe if you have a stupid simple site. If you have IOT devices connecting to it then this take does not work. Django is a good example of a framework that has good built in auth but allows for complex systems to interact with it still. Good authentication has many layers, reverse proxy, WAF, etc

Okay, but what if the system is down? Would you be unable to login to things?

I'm doing it right now.And it's not that difficult. maybe you're not talking about writing computer code.I don't know. maybe you're talking about some kind of project where you're not doing an online server. I don't know. sure, there's more than having a password. But it's not that difficult. 😃

Oauth 👌 Auth0 as a service is free if you don’t have many users.

OAuth or OTP. Preferbly OTP through a provider like Twilio. Is this alright?
