Yet its calm, observational gaze captures the distance between people and the quiet feeling of being alone with surprising clarity. Suzanne Vega is a singer-songwriter who captures the atmosphere of New York almost like a short story. “Tom’s Diner” was written in 1982 and became the opening track of her 1987 album Solitude Standing. In Japan, some people may also remember its melody from a late-1980s TV commercial, even if they did not know the title. The original version is completely a cappella, with no typical chorus. The same melody repeats like an inner monologue, making it feel as if we are sitting right beside her thoughts.
