I work for a local Sheriffs Office. We contract with 2 cities. It’s actually good for them. They have a multi million dollar agency at their disposal, jail, swat, patrol, detectives, schools resource, motorcycle, traffic, civil, warrants, everything provided. It’s about 700k a year and far less then a PD would cost. No worry of sick, injuries, insurance, maintenance, or even a station. We have a small substation in town at the local FD.

This is happening all across the country. It’s cheaper for cities to contract with the local Sheriffs Office than to have a agency of their own. The yearly salaries are not the issues, the insurance for the police dept and extended retirement payouts is the biggest problem. Not saying I agree with it but when you do the math cities are like ummmmm, I can do this cheaper with less headache.. I’m in!
