The Soviet Union played a major role in defeating Germany during World War II. After Germany launched Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, millions of German soldiers invaded Soviet territory. At first, Germany achieved rapid successes, capturing large areas of land and surrounding many Soviet troops. However, the Soviet people and army continued to resist. One of the most important turning points was the Battle of Stalingrad (1942–1943). Soviet forces surrounded and defeated the German Sixth Army, causing massive losses and ending Germany’s advance into southern Russia. Another key event was the Battle of Kursk in 1943, the largest tank battle in history. The Soviet victory there allowed the Red Army to begin a series of successful offensives. The Soviet Union had enormous resources and moved many factories east of the Ural Mountains, where they could continue producing tanks, aircraft, and weapons safely. Millions of Soviet soldiers fought on the Eastern Front, while civilians supported the war effort despite terrible hardships. As the war progressed, Soviet forces pushed westward, liberating occupied territories and driving German troops back toward Germany. In April 1945, the Red Army launched the Battle of Berlin, surrounding the German capital. After intense fighting, Berlin fell in May 1945. Germany surrendered shortly afterward, bringing the war in Europe to an end.
