For nearly 30 years, Cheryl Burt has lived with the pain of losing her two youngest sons. Her advocacy is why Minnesota is now giving 2,500 carbon monoxide detectors away to eight communities deemed at the most risk. In 2022, Sen. Amy Klobuchar sponsored a bill to give grants to states to give out free carbon monoxide detectors. Cheryl testified in Washington, D.C., to help get it passed. The grant program bears the names of the two sons she lost: The Nicholas and Zachary Burt Memorial Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act. Through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is now handing out 2,500 detectors in eight communities: Austin, Bemidji, Brainerd, Duluth, Red Wing, Rochester, Virginia and Willmar.
