There is a scene most of us recognise, a toddler in a supermarket refused a yogurt, screaming and kicking as though the world had ended, while we walk past feeling faintly superior that we don't have a small demon like that in tow. The truth is less flattering. That child is simply saying out loud what we feel constantly and never show, when someone we liked says they would rather just be friends, or a deal falls through, or the boiler breaks on the same day the tax office rejects our forms. Our problems are bigger than a missing yogurt, and somehow we are still expected to handle them without any of the tantrum. Most of us manage it, or something that looks close enough. We smile, say the weekend was nice, and carry on. But there is a small, furious person inside every one of us who would happily lie down on a supermarket floor right now and scream. Real wisdom is probably not pretending that person has gone away. It is learning to live alongside them.   How to apply this to your life:   Next time a small setback produces a large reaction in you, a missed train, a short email, notice the size of the feeling rather than judging yourself for it.   Give the feeling a private outlet before it goes underground, saying to yourself or someone close, this is actually making me want to scream, rather than performing a calm you don't feel.   Aim for managing the tantrum rather than eliminating it. The goal is company for that furious small person, not their disappearance.   Follow us for more useful ideas, every day.
