@hackproduct9: The sad reality of engineers today. A modern software engineer isn’t just writing code anymore. On any given day, you’re expected to: 🤖 Learn the latest AI tools and agents. 💻 Ship production code. 📞 Handle on-call incidents. 📋 Prepare demos for stakeholders. 🧠 Whiteboard system designs. 📚 Maintain documentation and KTLO. 🔍 Review PRs and mentor teammates. 💡 Experiment with new technologies before they become yesterday’s news. The challenge isn’t that any one of these is unreasonable. It’s that they’re all expected at the same time. The best engineering organizations understand this. A few thoughts for engineering managers: • Protect uninterrupted focus time. Deep work creates the biggest business impact. • Rotate on-call and KTLO fairly instead of relying on the same people. • Treat documentation, mentoring, demos, and architecture as real engineering work—not “extra” work. • Don’t measure productivity by how busy someone looks. Measure outcomes. • Give engineers dedicated learning time. AI is evolving weekly, and staying current is now part of the job. • Reduce unnecessary meetings and context switching whenever possible. • Celebrate technical excellence, not just visible firefighting. Great engineers don’t burn out because they dislike solving hard problems. They burn out because they’re constantly forced to switch between ten different jobs every single day. The future belongs to teams that protect their engineers’ attention—not consume it. If you’re an engineer, which ball are you struggling to keep in the air right now?
