Boyles Law states that at constant temperature, volume of a gas is inversely related to pressure. So as the pressure decreases upon ascent, the volume INCREASES. ๐™ƒ๐™ค๐™ฌ? When additional air is consumed at depth and a diver surfaces without exhaling, over tension or shear forces from the expansion of gas will cause damages (notably pneumomediastinum - rupture of alveoli, aka air sacs, & surrounding blood vessels).  ๐™Ž๐™ฎ๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ข๐™จ Chest discomfort and/or pain, coughing, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, change in voice, or a crunching sound listening to the heartbeat (Hammanโ€™s sign). Here are 3 other things the diver did wrong: 1. ๐ˆ๐ง๐ก๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ข๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐š ๐ฉ๐จ๐œ๐ค๐ž๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐š๐ง ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐œ๐š๐ฏ๐ž. You do not know the air quality: it may be stale, contaminated with gases, or have low oxygen levels. 2. ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐š ๐›๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ. It is critical to always have someone watching you to ensure you can get help if there is an accident, ranging from a shallow water blackout, bumping your head on the cave, or getting stuck! 3. ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ง๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ž๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก. The first thing you do when you surface should be breathing in air (recovery breaths), NOT spitting out a snorkel. Removing a snorkel upon surfacing puts you more at risk for blackout.
