Lena had called Miu thirty-seven times. Not all at once. She hadn't completely lost her mind. The first calls had been the evening of the gala. Then the following morning Then that evening and the next day. By the third day, Lena had forced herself to stop because staring at Miu's name while the phone rang endlessly was becoming unbearable. She tried messages instead. -Please talk to me. Nothing. -I know you're angry. You have every right to be. I just need to know you're okay. Nothing. -Miu, please. Nothing. Now two weeks had passed since the gala and Lena felt like she was slowly losing her mind. She had gone to Miu's apartment three times. The first time, nobody answered. Same again with the second. The third time, Bam opened the door. Bam had always liked Lena. Apparently that had changed. “Miu doesn't want to see you.” “I just want to talk.” Lena begs. “She doesn't.” “Is she okay?” Bam's expression softened slightly. “She's getting there.” “Can you tell her…” “No.” Then the door closed. Lena had stood in the hallway for another five minutes anyway. She tried their coffee shop. Nothing. The little restaurant they went to whenever Lena could escape work early. Nothing. The park where Miu liked to run. Nothing. Miu had simply disappeared from Lena's life and Lena was miserable. Her family noticed. Of course they noticed. Her father asked twice whether something was wrong. Lena blamed work. Her mother asked why she looked exhausted. Work. Everything was work and no one questioned it. The only person who would have known she was lying wasn't speaking to her. Anan had noticed too and he had been surprisingly kind about it. Their engagement remained mostly for show. They attended two dinners together after the announcement and had already fallen into an unspoken agreement not to discuss whatever was clearly happening in Lena's personal life. He didn't love her. She didn't love him. Everyone involved knew the engagement was ridiculous except the people who had arranged it. Lena spent most evenings alone in her apartment. Miu had been there so often over the last two years that reminders of her were everywhere. A shampoo bottle in Lena's shower. A phone charger beside the bed. Her favourite tea in the kitchen. A pair of slippers tucked beneath the coffee table. Lena couldn't bring herself to move any of it. She slept badly. Ate when she remembered. Checked her phone constantly. But Miu never called. . The knock came shortly after nine on a Thursday night. Lena was curled at one end of the sofa wearing an old T-shirt and shorts, barely paying attention to the television. She looked towards the door and for one ridiculous second, her heart jumped. Miu. She was on her feet before she could stop herself. Lena crossed the apartment quickly and pulled open the door and her smile disappeared. “Mum.” Her mother stood in the hallway holding her handbag. “Don't sound so disappointed.” “I wasn't.” “You were.” Lena sighed. “What are you doing here?” “Can I come in?” “Of course.” Lena stepped aside. Her mother entered and looked around. Lena suddenly became aware of the state of the apartment. There was a wine glass on the coffee table from yesterday. Two takeaway containers sat on the kitchen counter and a blanket was crumpled across the sofa. Her mother noticed all of it but didn't comment on it. That was worse. “Do you want tea?” “No, sweetheart.” Lena nodded. “Okay.” Her mother sat on the sofa and Lena reluctantly joined her. For several seconds, neither spoke. Her mother looked towards the television. “What are you watching?” Lena followed her gaze. “No idea.” Her mother smiled sadly. Then she looked at her. “Miu hasn't been around lately. I haven't seen her since the gala.

Lena looked down at her hands. “We had a falling out.” “What happened?” “Nothing.” “Lena.” “It's no big deal.” Her mother was quiet and Lena could feel her watching her. Eventually, her mother asked. “Are you in love with Miu?” CONTINUATION IN COMMENTS ⬇️ #lenamiu #ThaiGL #wlw
