Awareness to all parents: Our children have struggles too. My son is usually energetic, bubbly, and makwento. Kaya bihira namin siyang makitang ganito. And what broke my heart even more was realizing that he was trying to hide this emotion from us. That morning, he woke up just fine. During breakfast, he casually told me that he didn't get to finish his homework. So, I told him that it's okay and that he can still finish it before he go to school if it really bothers him. I thought he was already okay with it. After I left that day, I checked on him and saw this video. My heart instantly shattered to pieces. My Tebby was having a meltdown. I immediately called him and tried to calm him down. I comforted him until I know he was doing fine. Later that day, I asked him why he was crying and he told me that he couldn't keep up with his homework. That's when I looked closely on what he's been working on and I realized... mabigat pala para sa kanya. Knowing my son, he usually does his homework before going home and whenever I ask him he would say that he's done. So I thought all along that he was doing okay. My son is still learning Japanese. He can barely speak the language, yet every single day, he goes to school, listens to lessons in Japanese, reads, writes kanji, does his homework and tries his best to keep up. But sometimes, doing your best doesn’t mean you’re not struggling. And that was my realization as a parent. Sometimes we see our children playing, laughing, eating, and going to school normally, so we assume they’re okay. But they’re carrying things too. They may be young, but their struggles are real. After that, I enrolled my son with a Japanese language tutor, not because I wanted to put more pressure on him, but because I wanted to let him know that he can tell us when he needs help. That we understand his struggles and that we are here to give him support. Little by little, he’s becoming more confident. And this experience reminded me that sometimes our children don’t need us to solve everything. They just need to know that home is a safe place to struggle, to cry, to make mistakes, and to say, “I need help.” To all parents, let’s pay attention even to the emotions our children don’t show us. Because behind the happiest and most energetic child can be a little heart quietly trying its best to keep up. 🤍 Their struggles may look small to us, but in their little world, they can feel very big.
