One thing I think more couples need to understand is that you can be upset with your partner and still respect them. 🤎 Listen, you’re not always going to agree. You’re going to have moments when somebody says something that rubs you the wrong way. You’re going to misunderstand each other, get frustrated, and sometimes have conversations that get a little heated. That’s normal. You’re two different people with different emotions, perspectives, and ways of communicating. But here’s where I think we have to be careful… Don’t let a temporary emotion make you publicly disrespect somebody you love. You don’t have to embarrass your partner to prove you’re upset. You don’t have to raise your voice so everybody around you knows you’re having a disagreement. And you definitely don’t have to turn a private issue into a public conversation just because you’re frustrated in that moment. Sometimes the most mature thing you can say is, “We’re going to talk about this, but we’re not doing it here.” And that doesn’t mean the conversation is over. It doesn’t mean your feelings don’t matter. It simply means we’re going to give this conversation the privacy and attention it deserves. Because think about it… how many times have you said something out of anger that you wouldn’t have said if you had taken a few minutes to calm down? And how many times have you been more focused on making your point than actually understanding what your partner was trying to tell you? That’s something BOTH people have to work on. One thing I really believe is that you shouldn’t have to lose an argument for your relationship to win. Sometimes you need to stop trying to prove who’s right and start asking, “What are we actually upset about? What am I not understanding? And how do we fix this without hurting each other in the process?” And if you’re in public and things start getting heated, it’s okay to say, “Baby, I hear you. I’m not dismissing you. But let’s finish this conversation when we get home.” Then actually FINISH the conversation. Don’t use “not right now” as a way to avoid accountability. Don’t shut your partner down, walk away, and act like nothing happened. If you say you’re going to revisit something, make sure you do. And here’s another thing… protecting your relationship’s privacy doesn’t mean you can’t talk to somebody you trust when you need support. There’s a difference between seeking genuine advice and intentionally embarrassing your partner in front of other people. Your friends and family don’t need a front-row seat to every disagreement, but you should never feel like you have to hide mistreatment or handle something harmful by yourself. I also think it’s important to talk about these things BEFORE you’re in the middle of an argument. Have that conversation with your person. Ask each other: How do you want us to handle disagreements when we’re around other people? What helps you calm down when you’re frustrated? How can I let you know I need a minute without making you feel ignored? Those little conversations can prevent a whole lot of unnecessary hurt. And please remember, just because your partner is upset with you doesn’t mean they’ve suddenly become your enemy. You’re still on the same team, even when you don’t see eye to eye. You can be angry and still be considerate. You can stand firm on your feelings without humiliating somebody. You can disagree without attacking each other’s character. Because respect shouldn’t only exist when everything is good between you. It matters just as much when things aren’t. Protect each other’s dignity, even in the moments when loving each other feels a little harder. 🤎 I’m curious… do you think couples should always wait until they’re in private to address disagreements, or are there situations where something needs to be addressed right then and there? #HealthyRelationships #RelationshipTalk #fyp #RelationshipAdvice #couplegoals
