I think Arthur is a really good person but bc he was raised by mr narcisist genocidal maniac absent father, at the beginning of the show he just has no concept of how to be one😭 I genuinely think his little kid brain was like "well my whole purpose on earth is to become the leader of these people, and to do that i should kearn how from the guy leading them now" and as he grew up and no one told him anything or questioned him/corrected him bc he is the prince! so when merlin shows up and 5 seconds later hes like "omg yr an asshole stop being shitty!!" hes like...oh cool someone isnt intimated by my title and can tell me weather im a good person or not!!! and he really starts to see the oth e r servants and such BECAUSE he vales merlin's opinión. and he gets to see his mom and his little village etc and hes like wow I gotta keep all these ppl safe. I love that even when hes shitty about magic hes still fundamentally different than his father bc Uther cares about maintaining power bc he wants it. Arthur wants to be in charge bc he feels a responsability to the people! So unlearning bigotry is easier

I’d argue that Arthur definitely had kindness inside him already, but it was buried deeply where no one could see it because of how Uther raised him. Before Merlin arrived in Camelot, Arthur had only shown that softness and kindness to Morgana. It was only when Merlin arrived that Arthur began to show that side of himself to servants and the people of his kingdom. Merlin showed him that kindness to servants and lower ranking villagers wasn’t weakness… it was being a good person.
