only room up there for the important stuff
My art follows the seasons, and depending on the time of year, I am using different flowers and different leaves. Even when I have a favorite flower to use in my ceramics creations, it’s almost never available year round. One example is beautiful and romantic lilac that is only around for a short window in the spring. Part of me wishes they were blooming all year so I could create lilac dishes all year, and most of me is grateful they only bloom a short while because their absence makes me appreciate them so much more. Following the seasons also gives me a chance to to get creative and use whatever plants I see in my garden. It also makes me feel very connected to the cycles of nature and the rhythms of my garden. There is always a different leaf or flower sparking inspiration in my artwork from week to week. It makes my ceramics work always “new” to me. And in times when fewer things are blooming and growing, it makes my work challenging in a good way. Having “less” makes me think in new ways. I love having lilac flowers in my home every spring, and once they are nearing the edge of starting to wilt, I use them in my ceramics work. It is my way of honoring them, capturing a version of their beauty forever. I press the flowers and leaves carefully into ceramic clay. Aren’t their impressions just beautiful? Both the heart-shaped leaf and the flower. I especially love the tiny impressions of the individual flowers. In this video you can see me painting in the leaves and flowers with ceramic stains and underglazes. These are specific to the pottery process and can maintain color in the high temperatures of the pottery kiln. After this, I glaze the piece and fire it in the kiln to over 2200°F. Then the gold accent is added to the edge in a separate kiln firing. #lilacs #watercolor #satisfying #pottery #creativeart
