Multiple similar incidents have occurred since the new gates began full operation in late May and early June 2026. In several cases, people trying to squeeze through or jump the gates caused the panels to break. MARTA has documented at least five shattered gates in the first week alone. Some incidents involved deliberate vandalism. MARTA is now replacing the original thin glass with a single, thicker half inch pane on all new fare gates. The agency has warned riders that intentionally damaging the gates can result in felony charges because replacement costs exceed $500.
