The oldest reading of the Church, Irenaeus in the second century and Gregory the Great around the year six hundred, hears the hundred as one flock of everything made to know God: the angels and us. The uncountable host that never left (Dan 7:10; Luke 2:13), and the one kind that wandered, humanity, in Adam. The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine and goes down into the dark after the one, and that going-down is the incarnation.
