@schemingbanshee2.0: Replying to @Stefania “only when i loved something sooo much i had to be an ass” OK well good job now you made a bunch of authors that you claim to respect dislike you
Criticising free fics is like telling ur mom that the cookies she baked for you are too chewy

There’s literally an entire subReddit dedicated to calling out people who hate comment on fanfiction

I think the height of my fanfiction "critique" was something like "Hey! The first 2 paragraphs are repeated in this chapter, in case that was an accident and you wanna correct that😊" combined with a compliment about their work. I feel like that's the equivalent of telling someone their shoe laces are loose. Obviously by accident, fixable in 5 seconds.

Literally the only time I give unasked for advice is to tell them that they got a tag wrong or a term mixed up that usually affects the audience intended to read the fic. And I can count the number of times I've even had to do that on one hand. Other than that, I stay in my lane and simply DNF if I don't like how it's being written

I still remember years ago when a dude pointed out a tiny mistake in my fic, but in the most arrogant way possible. I stopped writing on that fic that day (yes I was in a bad head space at that time, but still) now years later I started to think about writing fic again but I’m still scared

As someone who writes fanfic it actually ruins my day getting comments that critique my writing, I know it’s not perfect because I’m writing for fun and not worrying about it. I had someone dm me once on Discord offering to beta read to fix my “very obvious gammer issues since I had so much potential” and I actually haven’t written since and I can’t write without thinking about how bad it is, this wasn’t even a fic I posted online it was of my oc x canon that I shared in a server

I "corrected" someone's fic once and it was only because the author said that they are open to suggestions and corrections and asked for feedback. It was in the HP fandom, where James Potter used a spell invented by Severus Snape and I asked in the comments if the plot of James stealing his notes and the spells Severus invented might be expanded because it would really add into the story (also because in canon James does use a spell invented by Severus). The author responded by thanking me for catching the "plot hole" and saying that it wasn't intended and she doesn't have a plan for it, but she just might write something around it later. I would never write such a comment on a fan work that did not invite this form of feedback and it still surprises me that someone would even consider doing it.

literally yes. what i post is the final results of me already combing through something and editing it to be the way i want it to be. i do not post fanfic to get feedback on the quality, i literally post it for fun and to contribute to the fandom. the one time

If you love something. You probably want that writer to keep writing and they probably know their own flaws better than you so just give them encouragement and keep your criticism to yourself if they've not asked. It ain't that hard.

As a writer I love when people give ideas for the stories direction, but I HATE feedback on my writing style or what I've already done. But I could genuinely never imagine leaving any kind of feedback on someone's work

If you really enjoy giving feedback on fics offer to betaread! Outside of that if authors aren’t asking for feedback in the notes don’t just give it 😭

the one time i "corrected" an author was when autocorrect diabolically had changed hoseok into hoe sock at a very serious moment in the fic and i couldn't NOT laught about that in the comments

The only reason to ever critique on ao3 is to request the tags be changed if they are misleading. That’s it.
