There’s always gonna be people who use tech in bad faith. It’s happened since tech was invented. And yes, A.I. music is trained on copyrighted material…but humans train on copyrighted material to get good at their craft, and their music is highly influenced by copyrighted material. If A.I. trained on generic material, it wouldn’t be able to create good music. But there is still A.I. slop, just like there is a bunch of organic music slop. The music industry is saturated with slop, although it’s entirely subjective as to what counts as slop. I review A.I. music and about half the folks don’t write their own lyrics. I can tell. And I sometimes call them out if I am at least 80% sure and I invite them to write their own lyrics. I create music with A.I. I know I could just say “make a good song” and hit generate but serious a.i. artists like myself have a creative process to ensure I create what was in my brain. I have a song that went viral called Grippy Socks (SL8 GRAY). People love my music, and I consider my artist, “SL8 GRAY” a fictional character and I am simply an Author. I don’t hide behind it. When someone creates a video using my song, I always leave a comment to let them know I created it.

The whole “democratizing art” shit, is it really shows how non-artists don’t value art for the same reasons as artists do. They see it as a consumable product, and they just want access to a product they like for as cheap as possible—instead of appreciating art as AN EXPRESSION OF HUMAN EXPERIENCE. I don’t care how good ai is ITS NOT ART

The problem with your arguments y that you are generalizing “AI music” as if it were a monolithic thing. There is AI AI music slop surely, but there is also singer songwriters and musicians that use AI music in their process if bringing about their creations.

When you say it’s been trained on obviously unprotected files. You should also make it clear that it doesn’t simply copy and paste. It performs complicated mathematical predictions. Which generate sound waves from scratch. And what it does generate is often so generic nobody could claim ownership realistically. And yes just like humans it will sometimes replicate something that has already been written or something close. That’s not really stealing. Ai Is automating something that humans do anyway. it’s changing the way we make music. But having experimented with it myself it can be as collaborative as you like. And I would argue that there is a human element. In that the more creative you are. The more descriptive you can be. The better the results. People who say it’s just prompts. Thats like saying words in books are just words. No. Words mean something. And if you put the right words together you can create something quite beautiful. Yes I agree with the argument that simply allowing it auto generate Melodies is ultimately pointless. But as a powerful production tool I’m in awe.

for me, i see ai generated music as an artist who's doing commission. you can ask it to make music of any genre you want, and it will make that. i think there's no problem if you don't have enough budget to hire an artist for something that's not significant (like a family gathering event or something, idk), or you don't find any artist yet but need a song to fill a game's level ost, atleast to show a tone you want for that stage to have (using ai as placeholder)
