Fridge is an extra layer of protection as it slows the growth of bacteria significantly compared to room temp. Micro organisms can grow on the outside of the vial and even on the rubber stopper. Yes swiping the top of the vial is a must, but some people forget to do so. It’s best left in fridge for that reason alone.
