It’s not about doing the math to figure out the age, it’s about knowing how many years apart you are! Half of the time I don’t even remember my own age but if someone says they’re born ’99 I know we’re 6 years apart 🤷🏻♀️

Its because most topics you talk about with your friends involve activities that involve the year you were born, not your age. For example what grade you are in.

Its because when we’re young and go to school two people in the same class could be for example 18 and 17 years old. So if someone would ask me how old are you I would answer for ex “born 03” because then you wouldn’t have to disclose that your 17 whilst your friend is 18. And it gives a perspective on what year in school your in and your age group. If I meet someone that says they are born the same year I would immediately know what grade their in and maybe if we have friends in common

The math isn't hard since asking someone's age, what you're really after is if the person is older or younger than you, and that's easily determined by comparing their birth year to yours
