Even if you pay for your prescription, the NHS budget is making up the difference in cost - most prescriptions cost a lot more than the prescription charge (and many people also get their prescriptions for free). In a world where everything is about cost and cost savings, GPs are being asked to do their bit and reduce the prescribing spend. There are many ways that this can be achieved and I share some methods that shouldn’t have a huge impact on patients, my fear being that newer treatments may be refuses to patients purely because of this cost cutting exercise. If a medication is approved by NICE as cost-effective, should doctors be rationing how many patients it is prescribed to because the commissioner wants to balance the books? Is this ethical? Does the patient have a say in any of this? #nhs #generalpractice #prescription #pharmacy #medicine
