As a woman who is blessed with many friends, here’s what I think is happening for ME: First, I prioritize connection over friendship. When I’m speaking with someone new, I’m not thinking, “I hope this turns into a friendship!”. Instead, I try to stay present and genuinely connect with them. Maybe it turns into a friendship, but it could also just be a one-off exchange where we crack a good joke and keep it moving. Maybe it provides me with a solid conversation that I needed on a random Tuesday night, and nothing more. Maybe we realize we have something in common and share tips or resources and move on. If I am interested in more, I’ll ask to see them again. But I’m genuinely curious about other people, which frees me up to enjoy them without expectation. Secondly, I initiate. I don’t care if we’ve only connected once– if I liked you, I’m going to reach out again and say, “Hey, come with me to yoga/ the park/ the museum.” Finally, I am verrrrrrrry comfortable mixing my friends. I love introducing people to each other, and in the long-term, it makes it easier to see all my people. Because (if people vibe with ach other) then I can work in more group hangs, relieving me of the pressure to invest with tons of people one on one. But that’s just me.
