I think a lot of people are reading too much into this. It may have been that he won a makeup prize that probably meant nothing to him. Then the coworker next to him says something like, “I wanted to win that so badly… maybe next time.” He probably looked at the prize and thought, “I don’t really care about makeup and she seems way more keen or excited about it than I am.” And I’m guessing he was put in an awkward position, where the coworker really wanted it, so he might’ve felt bad and just said “Oh well, you can have it then”… it doesn’t interest me anyway, without thinking too much. I’m sure we’ve all been in situations where someone wanted something more than we did, and out of generosity we gave it to them without overthinking it. I doubt he was sitting there thinking about the price of YSL or how much value the products have. He probably just saw someone who seemed genuinely disappointed and wanted to do something nice. If he had bad intentions, I don’t think he would’ve been excited to tell his wife about it. If it was something calculated, he might’ve not said anything. Instead, it sounds like he believed he’d done a good deed. People don’t all think the same way. Some people make decisions in the moment without thinking ahead. He might’ve not understood the value of the makeup or, or how others would see the situation. He just saw someone who wanted it more than he did. I think it’s worth giving people the benefit of the doubt before assuming the worst. Not every situation has a hidden motive or deeper meaning. I also hope this doesn’t stop him from being generous in the future because he’s worried about being judged or face backlash, because he isn’t sure what’s right or wrong. I think in my personal opinion that divorcing someone over make up is a huge leap. I’d rather be with someone whose instinct is to be generous, even if they make the occasional mistake, than someone who never thinks of others at all.
