@lydiarsilver: Agents receive literally hundreds of queries each month - so how do you stand out? The best way isn’t with gimmicks, but with a really brilliant cover letter that does these three things: - Shows off your writing - Shows off your market knowledge - Shows off your hook These make a submission shoot to the top of my pile - and make it so much easier to convince editors too #literaryagent #queryingauthors #amquerying #writersofbooktok #coverletter

Thank you, I believe my problems lie with my query letter. It’s more difficult than writing a book. Perhaps I should be more assertive. Something like this? The Road to Nowhere is a literary novel of approximately 120,000 words, a book that explores love, grief, guilt and ultimately self-destruction.

Hi Lydia, I’ve loved watching all your videos, they are so helpful! One thing I’ve been curious about (and this may be a silly question) is how to know if your book is young adult or adult? I find so many books seem to straddle the two, and I wonder if there are any definitive ways you know what category it falls under.

What about if people are already clamoring for your book and preorders are already happening?? 😅

Thank you for the advice!🫶🏻But I still have a question; I wrote a Dark Academia Murder Mystery and the plot twist is very unusual which would be a great and unique hook but it’s also a massive spoiler that takes away all the tension! So should I use the plot twist as a hook in my query letter?

I've received feedback from an agent, fellow authors and professional critiquer that my query letter is excellent yet I've received no requests. Are my pages likely the culprit?

Do you feel like going through querys is the heaviest admin you do in your job? Or is there more behind the scenes which actually takes up more of your time? x

Are publishers using ai to go through slush piles? If that becomes the standard practice, where does that leave literary agents?

Will you still read some of the actual book if the query letter is poor? I feel a bit doomed to write a crap query letter.

Does the literary agent get a percentage of the book’s sales for life? Or is it for a certain amount of time? Or for the first x amount of copies sold? And is it just for the book or for everything like tv, movies, merchandise etc?

I genuinely wish I’d learned how to properly write a query letter before I exhausted all my options and then self published 😂 I feel I did not do my book justice and I will die on the hill that I’ve got something special. But I think now, no one will know ☠️hahahaha. Querying is rough for sure! I’ve learned a lot since that attempt.

would you say that there’s much difference in the middle grade contemporary realism space between the UK and US? been finding a lot of 2020s American books that have plotlines and voices that fit with mine and I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence that I come across the American ones, but I don’t want to end up writing something that isn’t marketable in the UK cause I want to try and get an agent (I’m reaching near the end of my first draft currently)

As an agent, do you respond better to queries that come across as serious ad professional, or can a query be witty and humorous and still be considered?

Probably a stupid question 😅 but what do you mean by “know your hook”? Like the one log line you pitch to agents? The main premise? Or is it what makes the book “sellable”
