I am currently a Pre-med and I would NEVER ask a physician for their time and show up late. I always show up at least 30 minutes early just incase they change the meet up time or they show up earlier than the time schedule.

I think you’re making an unfair generalization — why call out Gen Z? Maybe create a video about etiquette you would appreciate as a physician that can help pre med students instead of putting them down!

Omg NEVER. My fear of being late as a pre med/med student is too strong. I show up early and pace until it’s an appropriate time to walk in the building. I reply to emails in .5 seconds.

This is crazy! I have been saying this. I don’t know how people have jobs & I can’t get one. And I pride myself in professionalism & values. When I tell you I have been desperate for any type of clinical exposure - I mean I would fly out just to get a days worth of exposure. I don’t get it. It’s upsetting. 🥺

as a current (Gen Z!) medical student- thank you for this!!! its a much much harder thing to learn when the expectation is on you IN MEDICAL SCHOOL and if you guys are upset by her words- trust me that expectation will be there

It is frustrating that certain individuals actions apply to a whole generation. As someone who has worked 2 jobs all of my undergrad and is actively working to boost my resume as a pre-med through MA work/scribing/volunteering/research etc. and then I have older people thinking that just because of my generation and age that I am the same, I don’t think it is fair, not everyone is the same.

Gen Z pre med here… I loved shadowing and found it incredibly difficult to find opportunities. Wouldn’t have done anything to risk that opportunity. So sorry you’ve encountered this with the ones reaching out to you. 😭

as a gen z myself i feel like the overall culture of our generation has less decorum than previous generations. i can also say that when i was a premed i would NEVER have squandered a mentor/ shadowing opportunity LOL

Hey! I am so sorry that this has been a consistent disappointment for you. If it is any consolation there are many of us (like myself) who take these opportunities seriously. As I shadow docs, I have consistently shown up before the surgeons, having reviewed the cases (for my own learning not because I think I could contribute), and worn professional attire (before switching into OR scrubs). I really hate that so many of us are behind the ball, but I promise it is not all of us

As a zillineal, I always made sure I was punctual and dressed appropriately for whatever obligation or opportunity came my way! If something came up, I’d communicate that in advance if I couldn’t make it or to reschedule. I don’t believe it’s a generation issue, it’s a priority issue on that individual!

We’ve had to make our MCAT program more selective because our coaches (resident physicians) were getting frustrated with flaky students. Students who’ve paid for the program mind you.

This is the enthusiasm that we want to see. And quite honestly, it’s what I expect. If someone can’t show up when we have a scheduled time to meet, this is not the profession for them.

I was like this as a premed and it’s social anxiety. I think we aren’t as socially adept as prior generations, I had to actively force myself in uncomfortable situations to stop myself from flaking
