@davidbombal: Is Cat7 a SCAM? Cat6, Cat6A, Cat7 and Cat8 are not equal. Learn which Ethernet cable supports 1Gb, 2.5Gb, 5Gb and 10Gb networks, and why Cat6A is usually the practical choice. #cat7 #cabling #networking
Cat6 can only carry 10gb for 10m. Cat7 can carry 10gb for 100m. Additionally can carry 40gb for 10m.

Total bullshit! cat 7 will be installed for future security! Not for current situations!

even cat 5e in theory should handle 10Gpbs if it's short enough.

his statement is somewhat wrong. if you are designing a network. and you have 4 clients each with a max bandwidth of 10G then you may want a 40G connector that goes out of the switch to connect to the router or another switch. especially i large enterprise networks witha lot of file sharing it may become stresefull on the network if you dont size the cables properly in accordance to the max throughput of all users.

Would you also need a T1 service or higher for bandwidth?

Always go with the highest you can afford. My house is Cat5, and now I have to rewire it for 10GbE.

bad advice, the cable will be there LONG after your devices have been superseded. I have multi gig at home now. it's entirely reasonable to future proof the house if you're coming to install fixed infrastructure.

There is another major advantage to cat 7 that is not just about bandwidth but rather more about bandwidth stability over longer distances. If you run a cat 6A cable over a distance of 100 feet or more yes it starts at 10GB per second but try measuring the bandwidth you get at the destination. It will be much less. cat 7 solves that problem.

Cat8 channels are standardized only up to 30 m. Intended primarily for 25GBASE-T and 40GBASE-T in data centers. It also supports 10GBASE-T, but the standardized channel length remains 30 m.

Future proofing 😏. It’s what I’m being taught in class. In 5yrs time do you really want to update the cabling often going through your ceiling to various ports around the house? No. Do it once do it right and be future proofed for years to come.

cat7 and 8 would have to be free for me to use it. anything over 10gig and it's just easier to use fiber. 100m of duplex LC fiber is 1/4th the price vs 100m of cat7. toss in a couple SFPs and it brings the fiber build up to half as expensive

Fiber optics should become the new standard to home network. Copper has way to many flaws. The only exception the need for POE but in most of these cases 1G is more than enough.
