Some people with OCD become convinced they have the power to prevent bad things from happening. Not because they actually believe they are magical. But because OCD creates a false sense of responsibility. “If I don’t do this compulsion, something bad might happen.” “If I think that thought, I could cause it.” “If I don’t repeat that phrase, I won’t be safe.” The compulsion might look logical in the moment, but it only teaches OCD that the compulsion was necessary. The more someone listens to OCD’s rules, the bigger OCD’s world becomes. Recovery isn’t about proving the feared outcome won’t happen. It’s about learning to tolerate uncertainty and resisting the urge to perform the compulsion, even when OCD insists it is necessary. If magical thinking OCD is taking over your child’s life, I have an entire podcast episode on how to help. Go to www.natashadaniels.com/psp407 #ocd #ocdproblems #ocdrecovery #ocdawareness #childocd
