We may be the last generation that reads. Reading does more than give us information. It develops cognitive agency: the ability to follow a complex argument, hold competing ideas in mind, distinguish truth from persuasion, and arrive at an interpretation of our own. But almost everything about the modern information environment is being engineered to remove that effort. Information arrives summarized, visualized, headlined, and increasingly interpreted by artificial intelligence. That is why I worry about what I call the Great Cognitive Divide: a future in which some people deliberately preserve the ability to think deeply, while others gradually relinquish more of that work to technology. The more complex the world becomes, the more important the facilities we can develop through reading also become.
