It’s getting to be a joke now. The amount of lost tax revenue the country could have gained by not making tobacco products so expensive is insane. Instead the Black market has almost entirely replaced legal retail sales. Yes smoking is unhealthy, but adults don’t like being told what to do with their body and not going to stop because you penalise them they’re just going to find another way. Raising the tax to this extreme was never going to be effective - Imagine all of the additional healthcare funding that could be gained by charging a reasonable tobacco excise.
