1. Origins (Beta & Early Metin2 Era) In the original vision of the Korean developers (Ymir Entertainment), the upgrade system followed hardcore MMO traditions: items required specific monster drops much earlier than today—often starting at +4, +5, or +6. Items like the Pig Nose, Wolf Liver, or Boar Tooth were designed as dedicated upgrade materials dropped by specific monsters in Map1 and Map2. 2. Why were upgrade items for +1 to +6 removed? Pacing and Player Retention: Success rates at the Blacksmith for +5/+6 were relatively low. Having to continuously trek back to Map1 to farm rare upgrade drops after every failed attempt created massive frustration and slowed down progression. Streamlining Early Game: Upgrading items from +0 to +6 was changed to require only Yang. This accelerated the early-game experience, while upgrade materials were shifted to +7/+8/+9 and higher-level gear. 3. Why were these items kept in the game instead of deleted? Rather than removing the assets and altering existing code, the developers recycled them: Repurposed for Quests: Items were turned into quest objectives (e.g., the Pig Nose for the Blacksmith's Level 6 quest "A Favor for the Blacksmith" and Mission Books). Code Stability: Deleting entries from the database ( item_proto / VNUMs) risked breaking connected quest scripts ( lua ). Starter Economy: Keeping them in the drop table allowed new players to sell extra loot to the General Store NPC for their first Yang.
