She wrapped a jacket around herself, went to the school office, and waited to be picked up. She was crying and felt too embarrassed to face the other children. When her father, Ben Sowards, heard what had happened, his heart sank. He knew that simply telling Valerie not to be embarrassed might not make the feeling disappear. So before leaving home, Ben splashed water across the front of his trousers, making it look as though he had experienced the same kind of accident. When Ben arrived, he did not immediately explain. Instead, he asked Valerie whether he could borrow her backpack to cover the wet patch. She looked confused at first, but once she understood what he had done, her tears turned into laughter. They left the school together, and Valerie no longer felt as though she was the only person carrying an embarrassing secret. Her 17-year-old sister, Lucinda, later shared photographs of the moment online, where the post quickly reached hundreds of thousands of people. Family members said Ben had done something similar years earlier, painting a black eye on himself after Lucinda injured her face while ice-skating. Ben could not erase Valerie’s difficult moment.
