@family_farm_life: Most people see a test plot as just a few rows of corn. To us, it’s one of the most valuable investments we make all year. Every season we plant multiple seed varieties side by side, comparing how they handle our soil, weather and many other things. The goal isn’t just to see which one yields the most—it’s to learn which hybrids consistently perform on our farm. The interesting part is that we’ll never know exactly how much money these test plots make us. Maybe a hybrid in the plot yields 8 bushels better than what we would’ve planted. Maybe it helps us avoid a variety that would’ve struggled in a dry year. Maybe it gives us the confidence to switch thousands of acres to a better-performing seed. There’s no receipt that says, “This test plot made you $25,000.” The return is spread across future decisions, better management, and fewer costly mistakes. That’s why we keep doing it year after year. Farming is full of decisions where the payoff isn’t immediate or easy to measure.
